2024 Global Unicorn Landscape: How AI is Transforming the Ecosystem

Trends in the Global Unicorn Landscape: 2024 Overview

Introduction

The CYZone Research Center has released insights reflecting the state of unicorn companies worldwide up until the end of 2024. This report highlights key trends involving valuations, sector shifts, and the dynamics of different regions.

Global Unicorn Landscape

Slowdown in Unicorn Creation

In 2024, the emergence of new unicorn firms has significantly slowed. Only 110 new unicorns were added, a minor increase from the previous year but an impressive decline of 84.7% compared to a peak of 721 new unicorns in 2021. That means the average growth rate for new unicorns has plummeted by 60% year-over-year since 2021.

Current Unicorn Count

As of the end of 2024, there are 1,867 existing unicorns globally, a slight increase from 2023’s total of 1,857. However, this count reveals a continuing market contraction from the highs experienced in recent years.

Valuation Trends

The average valuation of unicorns has seen a rebound, reaching $2.4 billion in 2024, marking a 26% increase year-over-year. Previous years had witnessed a steady decline—down from $6.8 billion in 2016 to as low as $1.9 billion in 2023. This recent recovery is largely attributed to an increase in investments focused on artificial intelligence.

Regional Dynamics

US and China: The Leading Players

The United States and China continue to dominate the unicorn landscape. The US is home to 838 unicorns (44.9% of the global total), while China has 511 unicorns (27.4%). Together, these two countries comprise 72.3% of the world’s unicorns.

During 2024, the US saw the addition of 61 new unicorns, while China added 20. Other countries like India and the UK contributed 5 new unicorns each, and France and Singapore added 3 each.

Concentration of Unicorns in Five Areas

In China, the concentration of unicorns is particularly high in five regions: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, which host almost 80% of the country’s total unicorns.

Sectoral Insights

Artificial Intelligence Takes Center Stage

Artificial intelligence has surged to prominence among new unicorn startups. In 2024, 34 out of the 110 new unicorns (approximately 30.9%) were in the AI sector, showing a marked growth from the mere 4.9% recorded in 2021. The US leads in AI unicorns, with 25 out of 61 new companies focused on this domain.

Decline in Enterprise Services

The enterprise services sector, which had been dominant over the previous five years, has recently dropped to a 14.5% share among new unicorns.

Exit Strategies: IPOs and Mergers & Acquisitions

Overview of Exits

In 2024, 62 unicorns exited the market. Out of these, 32 companies went public through initial public offerings (IPOs), constituting 51.6% of the total exits—a slight increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, 19 companies exited via mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

In a notable trend, the number of unicorn exits through M&A surged by 137.5% compared to the previous year. Unfortunately, 8 unicorns faced bankruptcy, and 4.8% of the exits involved companies whose valuations fell below $1 billion.

Examination of China’s Unicorn Market

A Decline in New Entries

In 2024, China only saw 20 new unicorns, the lowest in a decade, representing a 51.2% decrease year-over-year. The total count of unicorns in China as of the end of 2024 stands at 511, slightly down from the previous year largely due to exits surpassing new additions.

Focus on Key Industries

In China, the automotive transportation and artificial intelligence sectors showcased the most robust growth, each contributing 20% of new unicorns. The remaining 15% came from smart manufacturing.

Shift in IPO Preferences

The landscape for IPOs has shifted significantly for Chinese unicorns. With 12 out of 19 exits occurring via the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), it has become the main channel for these companies to go public. This shift contrasts sharply with the pre-2021 trend when many unicorns sought IPOs in the United States.
