University of Hong Kong’s Innovative Approach to Education

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is renowned for its high-quality educational offerings and inventive learning methods. Navigating Student Onboarding Challenges

HKU welcomes a diverse array of students, with a total of 18,491 undergraduates and 20,675 postgraduates joining each academic year from various backgrounds and cultures. However, the onboarding process can be daunting, often filled with logistical hurdles and an overwhelming volume of information. This makes it challenging for new students to find their footing in a new academic environment.

One significant issue faced by newcomers is the scattered information available across various platforms. Important details about course materials, university policies, and student systems frequently reside in disparate sources, causing confusion among students. This lack of a centralized hub for information impedes students from fully engaging in their academic and social lives.

Meanwhile, the faculty, numbering 9,288, along with 4,427 administrative staff, confront rising challenges stemming from a growing student population and the transition to hybrid learning. The increasing administrative responsibilities complicate the faculty’s ability to focus on essential teaching and mentoring roles. According to Dr. Wilson Kwok, Associate Director and Chief Information Officer, the busy start of each academic year adds to the pressure, making it hard for faculty to respond effectively to student inquiries.

Enhancing Learning and Teaching with AI

In January 2024, HKU became the first university in Hong Kong to implement Microsoft 365 Copilot, which leverages GenAI to optimize faculty productivity and alleviate administrative burdens. This tool empowers educators to manage course materials more effectively, analyze performance metrics, and streamline tasks that may detract from their primary focus: teaching. With GenAI’s assistance, faculty can provide personalized learning experiences, crucial for those navigating hybrid and remote education environments.

Ms. Flora Ng, Chief Information Officer at HKU, shared that the university aims to incorporate AI seamlessly into its educational strategy. She expressed optimism about the comprehensive and secure nature of Microsoft 365 Copilot, which includes features for creating customized chatbots to handle student queries efficiently.

In August 2024, HKU expanded its partnership with Microsoft by introducing Microsoft Copilot Studio. This AI-driven platform focuses on boosting student engagement and faculty performance further. A notable innovation from this initiative is the HKU First-Year Undergraduate (UG) Copilot, an AI-powered chatbot created to support first-year students through their academic journey. It answers commonly asked questions regarding course selections, degree requirements, and more, thereby relieving faculty of some of their administrative responsibilities.
