Meta Chooses Northeast Louisiana for $10 Billion AI-Optimized Data Center; Governor Jeff Landry Describes Investment as 'A New Chapter' for the State

Meta’s Major Investment in Richland Parish

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has recently announced an exciting project in northeast Louisiana—a massive $10 billion artificial intelligence data center. This venture will not only establish the state as a key player in the tech industry but also bring significant economic benefits to the local community.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

Direct and Indirect Employment Opportunities

  • Direct Jobs: The data center is expected to generate at least 500 new direct jobs within Richland Parish.
  • Indirect Jobs: Estimates from Louisiana Economic Development (LED) suggest that over 1,000 indirect jobs will also be created, leading to a total of more than 1,500 new jobs in the northeast region of Louisiana.
  • Construction Workforce: At the peak of construction, around 5,000 construction workers will be involved in building this state-of-the-art facility.

This investment is seen as a turning point for Louisiana, with Governor Jeff Landry highlighting how this marks a new chapter in the state’s economic development, offering new job opportunities in high-paying sectors.

The Project’s Scope

A Significant Infrastructure Development

  • Size and Location: The technology campus will span 4 million square feet, situated on the former Franklin Farm mega site, which covers 2,250 acres between Rayville and Delhi, approximately 30 miles east of Monroe.
  • Infrastructure and Energy Needs: To meet the center’s energy demands, Entergy Louisiana will develop new clean power generation facilities. Meta has committed to matching its electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy sources.

Kevin Janda, the Director of Data Center Strategy at Meta, referred to the new facility as a crucial element in Meta’s mission to enhance human connection and technological advancement.

Local Partnerships and Educational Initiatives

Community Engagement and Workforce Development

Meta is dedicated to fostering local relationships and supporting the regional economy. The company plans to source labor and materials from local businesses and is collaborating with community organizations to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.

Moreover, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) has allocated $250,000 for the creation of workforce training programs at Delta Community College. This initiative will focus on upskilling workers for both the construction of the data center and its ongoing operations.

Environmental Commitment

Sustainability Goals

Meta’s investment in sustainability is notable. Alongside ensuring that it uses renewable energy to power the data center, the company aims to minimize its water usage and plans to invest in water restoration projects in Louisiana. This dual focus on energy efficiency and water stewardship aligns with broader environmental goals.

Infrastructure Improvements and State Incentives

Financial and Logistical Support

Meta’s investment will also lead to more than $200 million in local infrastructure enhancements, which will benefit roads and water systems in the area. Additionally, the company may benefit from the state’s new incentive program that offers substantial tax rebates on data center equipment, amplifying its commitment to stay in Louisiana.

A Bright Future for Northeast Louisiana

The overall sentiment within the community and among local leaders is one of optimism. This project not only promises significant job growth and economic uplift for the surrounding areas but also positions Louisiana as a forward-thinking center for innovation in the tech sector.

Rob Cleveland from Grow NELA mentioned that the availability of low-cost energy, accessible land, and a supportive regulatory environment attracted Meta to this region, paving the way for more data center developments in Louisiana.

About Meta and its Operations

Meta’s operations revolve around creating platforms for social connection and communication. With multiple data centers worldwide, the new Richland Parish facility stands out as part of the company’s broader effort to meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure efficiently and sustainably.

As construction is set to begin in December and continue through 2030, the partnership between Meta, Entergy, and local authorities reflects a uniquely collaborative approach to economic development, emphasizing shared goals and mutual benefits for the residents of Richland Parish and beyond.
