Microsoft Introduces AI-Powered Screenshot Tool: Copilot+ Recall
Microsoft is rolling out an innovative AI feature called Copilot+ Recall, which captures screen snapshots every few seconds. This feature is currently in preview mode and is available to select users of Microsoft’s AI-enabled PCs and laptops.
Background of Copilot+ Recall
The Copilot+ Recall tool is a reintroduction of a previously introduced feature that was met with significant concerns regarding privacy. Initially announced in 2023, it faced intense scrutiny, with many referring to it as a “privacy nightmare.” Microsoft paused the rollout early in 2024 to gather feedback and now aims to expand its availability to users in the Windows Insider program.
Global Rollout and User Control
Microsoft plans for Copilot+ Recall to be available globally, although users in the European Union will need to wait until 2025 for access. Participation in the feature is optional; users can choose to opt in whenever they prefer. The company reassures users that they have the ability to pause snapshot saving at any time.
This feature is designed to help users quickly find past activities—including documents, photos, emails, and web browsing history. For instance, someone who spotted a dress online a few days prior could easily locate the site where they found it via the Recall tool.
Privacy Concerns and User Feedback
Dr. Kris Shrishak, a privacy advocate who previously criticized the Recall feature, acknowledges that making the tool opt-in is an improvement. However, he still expresses concerns over potential misuse. According to him, the feature could unknowingly capture information about other individuals who have not given consent. For example, images and messages from apps like WhatsApp can also be saved, meaning that private conversations could be included in the snapshots.
He further elaborates that users are akin to manually taking screenshots whenever they receive messages, even if they involve disappearing options on platforms like Signal. Such a capability raises alarms about possible exploitation by malicious users if they gain access to someone’s device.
Microsoft’s Assurances on Data Privacy
To address privacy apprehensions, Microsoft delineates that the Recall tool functions without sharing captured snapshots or user data with the company or any external parties. Information is also contained locally, which means it is not accessible to other users.
When users access Recall, they must confirm their identities before launching the feature, ensuring an extra layer of protection. Furthermore, users have the option to select which applications can utilize the feature. It should be noted that private browsing modes in certain browsers will not be captured by Recall.
Users can also delete any snapshots taken if they wish, providing additional control over their data.
Regulatory Oversight
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has expressed interest in the Recall feature since its initial announcement. They began inquiries early in 2024, noting that adjustments to the tool were made in response to privacy concerns. The ICO has stated they will continue monitoring the feature’s development as Microsoft moves closer to full launch.
This ongoing dialogue with regulatory bodies illustrates the importance of ensuring user privacy in the development of innovative technological advancements.
