OpenAI Unveils Codex CLI and Advanced AI Models
On Wednesday, OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, introduced a new open-source coding tool called Codex CLI, along with two advanced AI reasoning models. This launch marks OpenAI’s most significant open-source project since 2019.

Launch of Powerful AI Models
The initiative includes the full release of the "o3" model, noted as OpenAI’s most sophisticated AI system to date. In addition, a more compact version, referred to as "o4-mini," was also revealed. Altman described both models as exceptionally proficient in coding.
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Altman shared, "o3 and o4-mini are super good at coding, so we are releasing a new product, Codex CLI, to make them easier to use. This is a coding agent that runs on your computer. It is fully open source and available today; we expect it to rapidly improve."
Features of Codex CLI
Codex CLI is designed to operate on the user’s local machine while utilizing cloud connectivity to harness the reasoning capabilities of the o3 and o4-mini models. Beyond just generating code snippets, this tool can autonomously determine which local resources to utilize for completing specific tasks.
Support for GPT-4.1
OpenAI has announced that Codex CLI will soon incorporate features from the recently launched GPT-4.1 model, which is known for its enhanced capabilities.
Encouraging Developer Engagement
To foster innovation and encourage adoption of Codex CLI, OpenAI has initiated a $1 million grant program. This program will provide selected developers with $25,000 in API credits to support the development of groundbreaking projects utilizing Codex CLI.
Technical Advancements
OpenAI explains that the creation of the o3 model required approximately ten times the computational resources compared to its prior o1 model, which was previously regarded as the leader in reasoning performance.
Competitive Landscape
This launch is significant, especially as OpenAI faces increasing competition in the AI arena. Competitors such as DeepSeek from China introduced its R1 model in January, an open-source AI reported to mimic OpenAI’s high-level reasoning skills.
In February, Anthropic released a model that offers both speedy, instinctive responses and a more methodical, step-by-step reasoning process. This type of adaptive flexibility is something that OpenAI’s models have yet to fully replicate.
In recent developments, Google introduced its Gemini 2.5 Pro, a reasoning-centric model that outperformed OpenAI’s o3-mini across several benchmark tests.
Funding Milestone
In addition to launching new products, OpenAI recently completed an unprecedented $40 billion funding round, raising its valuation to $300 billion. Significant contributors to this funding round include SoftBank Group and Microsoft Corporation. This investment marks one of the largest funding rounds ever, almost doubling OpenAI’s previous valuation of $157 billion.
