Google Transfers Gemini App Team to DeepMind’s AI Research Lab

Google, a part of Alphabet Inc., is transferring the team behind its Gemini app to its AI research division, DeepMind. This shift aims to streamline operations and strengthen Google’s presence in the growing field of generative AI.
This decision follows recent enhancements across various Google AI products, including the launch of NotebookLM with audio capabilities, improved information retrieval in its search and Lens features, and a refreshed Google Shopping experience designed for the AI era.
Changes in Google’s Organizational Structure
To reinforce its structure, Google has created Google DeepMind and merged the Platforms & Devices teams. The Gemini app team, led by Sissie Hsiao, will now operate under the supervision of Demis Hassabis at Google DeepMind. This integration is expected to foster better feedback mechanisms, speed up the rollout of new models, and refine post-training processes, capitalizing on the current momentum in AI product development.
Additionally, the Assistant teams that focus on device integration will be combined with the Platforms & Devices group. This merger is designed to boost collaboration and enhance the user experience in AI-driven home technology.
Leadership Adjustments to Boost AI Strategy
As part of these structural changes, Prabhakar Raghavan is moving into the role of Chief Technologist at Google. His primary goal will be to provide technical guidance and foster a culture of innovation. Raghavan has been deeply involved in various sectors at Google for over a decade, from Research to Ads, contributing to initiatives like Smart Reply and Smart Compose in Gmail, where artificial intelligence improves user interactions.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, noted that Raghavan’s leadership led to significant advancements in areas like AI Overviews in Search, enhanced Maps features, and innovations in Ads and Shopping.
Nick Fox will replace Raghavan as the senior vice president of Knowledge & Information (K&I). Fox has played a vital role in shaping Google’s AI product pathway, working closely with Raghavan on the K&I strategy. Pichai highlighted Fox’s broad experience within K&I, including contributions to Search, Assistant, Shopping, Travel, and Payments. Fox has also been influential in advertising, establishing a focus on quality and user experience.
New Advertising Features in AI
Recently, Google began incorporating advertisements into its AI Overview feature, signaling a significant step in enhancing advertising capabilities within its AI-driven search tools. This AI Overview tool generates summaries based on specific search queries as part of Alphabet’s effort to improve the user experience with artificial intelligence.
