During a recent event at CNBC’s CONVERGE LIVE, Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s managing director of international strategy, discussed the challenges the company currently faces. He noted that OpenAI is not lacking in market demand for its innovative artificial intelligence solutions. Instead, the main hurdle is converting the enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence into real-world, production-ready applications.

Jay emphasized that many companies face a gap in what he calls "AI fluency." This term encapsulates the understanding needed to take theoretical AI concepts and translate them into practical business products. He highlighted that working with large language models, like those used in OpenAI’s offerings, represents a "new paradigm" in technology. Unlike traditional software, there are unique complexities involved. Specifically, Jay pointed to the necessity of building appropriate "guardrails" to ensure safety and proper use.

ChatGPT Usage Trends

At the same event held in Singapore, Jay highlighted the rapid increase in the usage of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, stating that Singapore holds the record for the highest per-capita usage of this chatbot globally. OpenAI already plans to establish an office in Singapore, further emphasizing its focus on the Asian market.

The Global Potential for Asian Companies

Jay believes that artificial intelligence offers unprecedented opportunities for companies in Asia. He remarked that this is a pivotal moment where Asian firms can step into leadership roles on the global stage. Traditionally, technological innovations have emerged first in regions like Silicon Valley before making their way to Europe and beyond. Now, however, there is the possibility for an Asian company to become a frontrunner in AI innovation.

An Increasing Demand for AI Solutions

According to Jay, there is a "tremendous demand in the market across all segments for AI" solutions. He described the current landscape as a "rollercoaster," with OpenAI striving to keep up with the rapid surge in interest and adoption of AI technologies. Unlike earlier technology shifts that had clearly defined early and late adopters—such as software-as-a-service (SaaS) or cloud computing—AI is experiencing a simultaneous adoption across all sectors.

Jay pointed out that various stakeholders, including consumers, businesses, educators, and developers, are rapidly embracing AI technologies. He mentioned that ChatGPT alone has surpassed 400 million weekly active users, demonstrating just how embedded AI has become in everyday life.

Understanding AI Readiness

Jay stressed that artificial intelligence is no longer a distant possibility—it’s fully operational and ready for implementation. He believes that businesses are already undergoing transformations due to AI technologies. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for example, is an AI-based chatbot that leverages deep learning methods to create human-like responses to user queries. The company, co-founded in 2015 by notable figures like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, is significantly funded by high-profile investors, including Microsoft.
