New Oscar Rules Embrace AI in Filmmaking
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled new regulations for the upcoming Oscars, which include a significant change regarding artificial intelligence (AI). This decision follows controversy surrounding films like “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez,” which faced criticism for their use of AI in production.
Industry Perspectives on AI
The acknowledgment of AI in filmmaking represents a significant shift for the Academy. Some industry experts have begun to welcome the technology, highlighting its advantages. According to the BBC, AI’s capabilities in quickly adapting to an artist’s tone and style or making subtle edits have garnered interest in both music and film production. Concerns from Creatives
Despite the potential benefits, many actors and writers remain concerned about AI’s impact on their professions. Notably, during the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes in 2023, the threat of generative AI replacing creative jobs was a major point of contention. Unions played a crucial role in negotiating protections against the technology to safeguard writers and actors from being replaced or undercut by automated systems.
According to the New York Times, these negotiations highlighted fears that studios would prioritize cost-cutting and efficiency by resorting to AI tools like ChatGPT for tasks such as research, treatment, and script development. Yet, some industry veterans argue that while AI can assist in generating basic outlines or ideas, it lacks the emotional depth needed for exceptional filmmaking. Jonathan Kendrick, co-founder and chairman of Rokit Flix, commented, “It’s like having a bad writer help you…if you need something with emotional weight, AI isn’t going to get you an Oscar.”
Voting and New Award Initiatives
In conjunction with the new AI rules, the Academy has implemented additional voting requirements. From now on, voters must watch all films nominated in each category before casting their votes in the final round. This change aims to enhance the integrity of the awards process and ensure that voters are well-informed about the contenders.
