Expanding Access to Digital IDs
The landscape of digital identification is continuously evolving, allowing individuals greater convenience and enhanced security. A noteworthy development is the ongoing exploration of certification within the digital identity trust framework established by the U.K.’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. This certification could enable residents to utilize their Google Wallet ID for tasks such as purchasing alcohol and accessing a variety of services.
Digital ID Advancements in the U.S.
Several states across the United States are set to join the digital ID movement. Residents in states like Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will soon have the opportunity to save their government-issued digital IDs to Google Wallet. This step contributes to a growing trend where states including Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico allow their residents to use mobile IDs at the DMV for a smoother customer experience.
As the deadline for the REAL ID Act approaches on May 7, 2025, individuals may use ID passes generated from U.S. passports at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. This is particularly helpful for those who may not possess a REAL ID driver’s license. However, it’s essential to remember that these digital ID passes are supplementary; individuals should carry their physical IDs as necessary.
Future Applications of Digital IDs

In the near future, users will be able to utilize their digital ID for functions like recovering Amazon accounts, accessing healthcare services via CVS and MyChart by Epic, and verifying personal profiles on platforms such as Uber.
Enhanced Age Verification Techniques
Many online services require users to verify their age, creating a need for systems that both confirm age and maintain privacy. To address this, Google is incorporating Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) technology into Google Wallet. This innovative approach ensures that individual identities remain unlinked from age verification, enabling a fast and efficient way to confirm age across numerous mobile applications, websites, and services that leverage the Digital Credential API.
ZKP technology will also be integrated into other Google products. Furthermore, applications such as Bumble are set to use Google Wallet’s digital IDs for user identity verification, with ZKP enhancing their age verification processes. To facilitate broader adoption, Google plans to open-source its ZKP technology, allowing other wallets and online services to benefit from these advancements.
