Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, is optimistic about integrating Gemini, the company’s AI model, into Apple’s iPhones this year. He discussed this possibility during a recent antitrust trial where he testified about Google’s practices.
Gemini AI: Expected Integration with iPhones
Last year, discussions took place between Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook about bringing Gemini to iPhones. While Apple has previously partnered with OpenAI for the inclusion of ChatGPT in iOS 18, the native integration of Gemini is still pending.
Despite the close to one-year wait, reports indicate that both tech giants are in ongoing negotiations regarding integrating Gemini into Apple’s iPhone ecosystem. During the trial, Pichai expressed his hope that this collaboration could be finalized by mid-2025, which might allow for the announcement of Gemini during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
Potential Features of Gemini on iPhone
If the integration occurs, we may see new features introduced in iOS 19 that showcase Gemini’s capabilities. Currently, Apple utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT for advanced Siri inquiries and other writing functions. With Gemini on board, users might have the choice between using ChatGPT or Gemini’s AI functionalities for similar tasks.
Financial Aspects of the Integration
A point of interest is whether Google will compensate Apple for this integration. In the past, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI for ChatGPT did not involve any financial exchanges. Apple has valued its exposure to ChatGPT as beneficial enough to forego a monetary deal.
However, the situation may differ with Google. The company already pays Apple billions annually to remain the default search engine on all of Apple’s devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This existing financial relationship suggests that Apple might not pursue a separate payment agreement for the Gemini integration.
As the discussions between Google and Apple continue, tech enthusiasts and industry analysts will be watching closely to see how this potential partnership unfolds and what it may mean for future iOS updates and user experiences.
