Gemini App to Include Built-In Image Editing Features
Google has recently announced the expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered image editing feature within the Gemini app. This new functionality allows users to make targeted modifications to images directly through the AI chatbot, eliminating the need to switch between different applications. Initially introduced in March as part of Google AI Studio, this feature is now powered by the Gemini 2.0 Flash AI model, which offers users the ability to interactively request changes to images, such as adding or removing objects, enhancing backgrounds, and more.
Gemini App Now Offers Image Editing Capabilities
Although Gemini entered the image generation arena later than competitors like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Midjourney, it is rapidly catching up. The image editing capability was first unveiled in early 2024 but was retracted shortly after due to reports of the chatbot producing inaccurate and inappropriate images. Following refinements, Google reintroduced the image generation feature in December 2024 alongside Gemini 2.0 Flash.
According to a recent blog post from Google, the rollout of the native image editing function in the Gemini app is taking place in phases, meaning it might take a few days for all users to gain access. This feature is set to be available globally and supports over 45 languages, making it accessible to a wide range of users.
Key Features of Gemini’s Image Editing
The Gemini 2.0 Flash capabilities allow for various types of image manipulation, whether the user uploads a photograph or uses an AI-generated image. For example, users can upload a picture of a table and request the AI to add flowers to it. Some of the specific edits users can perform include:
- Changing the background of an image.
- Replacing objects with different items.
- Adding new elements or objects into an image.
- Making subtle changes to specific subjects in a photo, like altering hair color.
These tools provide users with a lot of creative control and flexibility over their visual content, making it easier to achieve the desired aesthetic.
Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Safety
Despite the exciting possibilities of these features, there are valid concerns regarding the potential misuse, especially with the creation of deepfakes. Google has stated that its models are designed to decline any requests that could lead to offensive or harmful content. To further ensure safety, images created or modified using this feature will include an invisible digital watermark known as SynthID. There are also plans to test a visible watermark on all AI-generated images to reinforce accountability and transparency.
With this new functionality, Google aims to enhance user experience while maintaining rigorous safety standards, reflecting a commitment to responsible AI development. As the Gemini app continues to evolve, it represents an important step in bringing advanced AI-driven creative tools to a broader audience.
