Government Reportedly Notified X or Grok Regarding Hindi Slang Response; Engaging in Discussions with Both Platforms

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has not formally notified the social media platform X, earlier known as Twitter, or its Artificial Intelligence (AI) service, Grok, regarding concerns about the chatbot’s use of Hindi slang in its interactions. Currently, the Ministry is in discussions with both platforms to clarify which specific laws may have been breached, according to reports by ANI.
Understanding the Communication Between MeitY and X
Officials from MeitY are in contact with representatives from X to understand the context and details of the alleged violations. They are reviewing any instances where the platforms may have breached Indian laws. As per ANI, earlier advisories sent to social media companies by MeitY remain applicable and are still in effect.
Sources have clarified to ANI that there has been no formal notice issued to Grok or X at this time. The Ministry’s discussions aim to grasp the nature of the potential violations and work on addressing these concerns collaboratively.
What is Grok?
Grok is an AI chatbot developed by xAI, designed to help users with inquiries and provide insights based on a variety of topics. Part of its function includes offering responses infused with elements of humanity, aiming to assist users effectively while engaging them in a conversational manner. The creators of Grok have stated that their objective is to support users in finding answers and gathering information that matters to them.

Earlier this year, MeitY conducted a workshop focused on creating a Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC). Discussion points included ways to enhance the grievance redressal framework outlined in the Information Technology Act of 2000.
