Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how we create and perceive art, including food imagery. In this article, we will evaluate how three prominent AI platforms—Google Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Meta AI—perform when tasked with generating an enticing three-course meal: an appetizer, main course, and dessert.
Setting Up the Comparison
To make the evaluation fair, I informed each AI model of my intent to create a cohesive three-course gourmet meal. I prepared three specific prompts, one for each course, focusing on the visual appeal and mouthwatering qualities of the dishes.
This challenge showcased each AI’s ability to produce realistic food images while highlighting their capacity for creativity, texture, and composition within a single visual frame. The prompts were structured to encourage originality while still adhering to the high standards expected in a gourmet dining experience, aiming for images that look as appetizing as they sound.
The Evaluation Process
For the comparison, I used each platform’s image-generation capabilities at their default settings. I did not utilize premium models available on Google Gemini and ChatGPT. The image generation process involved text-based prompts, and the results were reviewed based on realism and creativity.
1. Appetizer
Prompt: “I’m creating a gourmet menu with three courses. Please create an image of the appetizer.”
- Google Gemini: The appetizer lacked appeal, with a presentation that felt uninspired. The image looked more like a centerpiece than a dish ready to be enjoyed, resulting in little enthusiasm.
- Meta AI: The shrimp cocktail was visually striking, featuring vibrant colors and excellent texture. Its lifelike plating resembled a magazine-worthy presentation, making it very appealing.
- ChatGPT: The caprese salad featured bold colors and interesting textures, though it had a slightly surreal quality. The addition of bread contributed to its visual appeal, surpassing the lackluster presentation seen in Gemini’s offering.
Winner: Meta AI provided the most visually appealing appetizer, boasting creativity, realism, and attention to detail.
2. Main Course
Prompt: “Thank you for the appetizer. Please create an image of the main course.”
- Google Gemini: The filet mignon, paired with mashed potatoes and a delectable sauce, presented beautifully and showcased excellent detail.
- Meta AI: The main course appeared exceptionally enticing, with realistic plating and fine details that enhanced its mouthwatering quality.
- ChatGPT: This rendition of the entrée fell flat due to an unattractive sauce color and unappetizing vegetable presentation, lacking the detail and realism offered by the other two models.
Winner: Meta AI excelled once again with its realistic depiction and appealing presentation, while ChatGPT’s version failed to excite.
3. Dessert
Prompt: “Thank you for the appetizer and main dish. Please create an image of the dessert.”
- Google Gemini: The strawberry layer cake was elegantly displayed, with vibrant colors and excellent sauce detailing that made it visually appealing.
- ChatGPT: The molten lava cake had a fun aesthetic but leaned towards a cartoonish representation that didn’t prioritize realism.
- Meta AI: The ice cream sundae appeared well-crafted, though it failed to impress after the strong performances in the earlier rounds, lacking final details and cohesion.
Winner: Google Gemini produced a dessert that was simple yet attractive, while ChatGPT chose an overly artistic approach that detracted from realism.
Overall Performance Summary
Among the three AI platforms, Meta AI consistently delivered the most realistic and enticing food imagery. While it faltered with its dessert, its strength in the appetizer and main course categories was notable. ChatGPT offered creative interpretations that appealed to an artistic audience but often sacrificed realism. Google Gemini provided sound representations but lagged in detail compared to Meta AI.
