Microsoft Edge’s Sidebar Expands AI Features

Microsoft Edge’s Sidebar has recently enhanced its offerings for AI enthusiasts. The integration of Copilot within the Sidebar now allows users to access past conversations and added support for the "Think Deeper" feature.

New Features and Gradual Rollout

Leo Varela first brought attention to these updates by sharing screenshots on Reddit. It’s important to note that these features are being rolled out gradually, so not every user will have access to them immediately. For instance, while some users can access previous conversations in Copilot, the Think Deeper feature is still awaiting wider distribution.

This update makes Copilot in the Sidebar much more competitive when compared to its counterparts on the web and Android platforms. Currently, it surpasses the web version by providing users with the ability to revisit past conversations, a feature that the web version currently lacks.

What is Think Deeper?

The Think Deeper feature is powered by OpenAI’s o1 model. It focuses on aiding users with complex tasks that involve nuanced thinking and comparison. For example, if someone is torn between buying an electric vehicle or undertaking a home renovation, Think Deeper can simplify the decision-making process by presenting a comparison of the pros and cons.

As indicated by its name, Think Deeper is aimed at facilitating thoughtful and extended discussions. While it may take a bit longer to generate responses, the answers tend to be more comprehensive compared to regular Copilot responses. Users have reported that follow-up questions yield better results when utilizing the Think Deeper feature.

Access and User Experience

Copilot users have free access to Think Deeper, although Copilot Pro users enjoy a priority during peak usage times. The added functionality of the Edge Sidebar enhances overall browsing and productivity by streamlining how users interact with AI.

Features of Microsoft Edge Sidebar

The Microsoft Edge Sidebar has gained popularity since its introduction, often dubbed "the best browser feature you’ve never heard of" back in 2022. It operates as a compact tab that can be hidden or revealed based on the user’s needs. The Sidebar serves various purposes, offering access to messaging applications like Telegram and handy tools like calculators.

In my personal experience, I frequently use Sidebar for Microsoft Edge Drop, which allows for convenient file sharing, and to preview how online articles will appear on mobile devices. The Sidebar has undergone numerous updates, further refining its functionality. The inclusion of a straightforward way to access Copilot within the Sidebar eliminates the need to switch to a new tab, significantly enhancing user experience.

The Evolution of Copilot in Microsoft Edge

Previously, the capabilities of Copilot in Edge’s Sidebar were somewhat limited compared to the web version. However, the introduction of conversation history has brought both versions closer in functionality. Additionally, the incorporation of the Think Deeper feature marks a noteworthy improvement in the usefulness of Copilot within the Sidebar.

Many believe that with these upgrades, Copilot in the Sidebar may currently be the most effective way to engage with Copilot on a PC. However, it’s worth noting that this might change with the upcoming release of a new Copilot app for Windows 11, which is currently in testing stages.

As the features and capabilities of AI continue to evolve, Microsoft Edge’s enhancements are positioning it as a robust tool for users interested in leveraging AI for their online tasks.
