Copilot Now Available on OneDrive for Web

Quick Overview
- Copilot has been launched for OneDrive on the web.
- Available to all Microsoft 365 subscribers.
- The feature can only be accessed by the “owner” in the Microsoft 365 Family plan.
Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot, has experienced mixed feedback from users. In fact, a recent glitch in Windows 11 that led to Copilot’s removal was met with approval from some corners. Additionally, the decision to rebrand Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Copilot is considered by many to be a questionable move. With the AI tool now integrated into popular applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, it appears that Microsoft 365 users have little choice but to engage with it. To further this trend, Microsoft has recently introduced Copilot support for OneDrive on the web.
Copilot in Various Applications
In a recent blog post, Microsoft confirmed that Copilot is now accessible in OneDrive for web. This feature has been available for commercial subscribers since September 2024, and it is now rolling out to Family and Personal users as well. Microsoft presents Copilot as a reliable assistant aimed at enhancing productivity.
Users can expect to see various functionalities of Copilot in OneDrive for web, including:
- Summarizing up to five selected documents.
- Comparing the contents of multiple files with side-by-side tables.
- Answering questions about your OneDrive documents through a dedicated chat window in the interface.
Limited Access for Family Plans
Interestingly, although the Copilot feature is available for users subscribed to the Microsoft 365 Family plan, it can only be accessed by the plan’s “owner.” This means that other family members sharing the subscription will not be able to utilize the Copilot functions. Microsoft appears to have decided that the cost of the Family plan does not justify access for all members.
This feature is starting to roll out for OneDrive for web customers, and users logging in might see a notification similar to the following:
New! Copilot included in your Microsoft 365 plan
Microsoft 365 has been enhanced with Copilot, our advanced AI assistant that streamlines tasks. Your subscription provides AI credits that enable you to utilize Copilot across Microsoft 365 applications. Note that it may take up to 48 hours for you to access Copilot in OneDrive.
Microsoft also stated that while “most” users should gain access to Copilot in OneDrive shortly, the complete rollout process could extend until June 2025.
