DeepMind Announces Plans to Utilize AI Models for Physical Robots

Google’s Innovation in Robotics with Gemini 2.0 AI

Recently, Google DeepMind introduced two new advanced AI models aimed at enhancing robotics capabilities. These models, known as Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER (Extended Reasoning), operate on a platform called Gemini 2.0. Google claims this AI is its "most capable" iteration to date, representing a significant leap from earlier models.

Partnership with Apptronik for Humanoid Robots

Google has formed a promising collaboration with Apptronik, a Texas-based robotics company. Together, they aim to develop the next generation of humanoid robots utilizing technology from Gemini 2.0. Apptronik has previously partnered with prominent organizations such as Nvidia and NASA, showcasing its ambitions in the field of robotics.

Demonstrations of AI Capabilities

In a series of demonstration videos, Google showcased the working capabilities of Apptronik robots empowered by the new AI models. The robots effectively executed various tasks, including:

  • Filling up lunchboxes
  • Shifting plastic vegetables
  • Zipping up bags

These tasks were completed in response to spoken commands, highlighting the robots’ potential for real-world applications.

According to Google, for AI models in robotics to be genuinely useful and beneficial, they must exhibit three essential qualities:

  1. General Capability: The AI should adapt seamlessly to various tasks and environments.
  2. Interactivity: The robots must understand instructions quickly and respond promptly to changes in their surroundings.
  3. Dexterity: They should mimic human-hand movements to accurately manipulate objects.

These qualities ensure that robots can operate effectively in diverse real-life scenarios.

Gemini Robotics-ER: A Foundation for Innovation

Gemini Robotics-ER is specifically designed to help robotics developers create their own advanced models. This version is being made available to select organizations, such as Apptronik and other trusted partners like Agile Robots, Boston Dynamics, and Enchanted Tools. This expanded access will encourage innovation and experimentation in the robotics space.

A Competitive Landscape in Robotics and AI

Google isn’t the only company exploring the integration of AI and robotics. In recent months, other key players have made significant strides in this area. For instance, OpenAI has invested in a startup named Physical Intelligence, which aims to infuse general-purpose AI capabilities into robotic systems. OpenAI has also recruited new talent to spearhead its work in consumer hardware and robotics initiatives.

Tesla is another major player in the humanoid robotics sector with its Optimus robot project, which seeks to revolutionize how robots interact with the physical world.
