Google DeepMind Unveils Advanced AI Models for Robotics

On a recent Wednesday, Google DeepMind unveiled two new artificial intelligence models specifically designed for robotics. These models, known as Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER (Extended Reasoning), operate on what Google claims to be its most advanced AI platform to date, Gemini 2.0.

Partnership with Apptronik

As part of this initiative, Google has formed a partnership with Apptronik, a robotics company based in Texas. This collaboration aims to develop the next generation of humanoid robots powered by Gemini 2.0. Apptronik has a strong background in robotics and has previously collaborated with notable organizations like Nvidia and NASA. Just last month, Google joined a significant funding round of $350 million for Apptronik, further solidifying their partnership.

Demonstration of Capabilities

In demonstration videos, Google showcased Apptronik robots equipped with the new AI models performing various physical tasks. The robots were seen plugging devices into power strips, filling lunchboxes, rearranging plastic vegetables, and zipping bags—all in response to spoken commands. While these demonstrations illustrate the robots’ capabilities, Google has not yet provided a timeline for when this technology will be available to consumers.

Key Requirements for Robotics AI

In a blog post about the new AI models, Google outlined three essential qualities that AI models for robotics must possess to be effective:

  1. Generalization: The ability to adapt to diverse environments and situations.
  2. Interactivity: Quick understanding and response to instructions and changes in surroundings.
  3. Dexterity: The ability to manipulate objects skillfully, similar to how humans use their hands.

Gemini Robotics-ER is particularly aimed at robotic researchers who want to build their own models on a solid foundation of technology. It will be accessible to Apptronik and a select group of trusted testers, including several well-known robotics companies like Boston Dynamics.

Competition in AI Robotics

Google is not the only tech giant exploring the integration of AI into robotics. For example, OpenAI has recently invested in a startup called Physical Intelligence that focuses on creating large-scale AI models designed to enhance robotic capabilities. In conjunction with this, OpenAI has also hired ambitious talent from Meta, specifically from the team that worked on the Orion augmented reality initiative, to lead its robotics endeavors.

Additionally, Tesla is also making significant strides in humanoid robotics with its own robot, known as Optimus. This move signifies a growing interest among tech companies to harness AI within the robotic sector, as they recognize the potential applications of this technology in various fields.

The Future of Robotics with AI

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, expressed on social media that the company views robotics as a testing ground for translating advancements in AI to the physical world. Pichai emphasized that the robots developed will leverage Google’s multimodal AI capabilities, enabling them to adapt and evolve in real-time according to their environments.

As these developments unfold, the integration of AI with robotics is poised to revolutionize how machines interact with the world, paving the way for a future where robots can perform tasks that currently require human intervention.
