Deepseek vs. ChatGPT: Evaluating AI’s Speed in Solving GATE Questions

DeepSeek vs. ChatGPT: Can AI Tackle GATE Questions?
The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a significant exam in India, particularly for students pursuing post-graduate studies in engineering and related fields. Conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, the results for GATE 2025 were announced on March 19. GATE is known for its challenging questions across multiple disciplines, including biotechnology, civil engineering, and artificial intelligence.
Given the complexity of GATE, we set out to investigate if advanced AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT could solve GATE 2024 questions effectively. Here’s a summary of their responses.
GATE 2025: Aerospace Engineering
ChatGPT’s Approach
In an aerospace engineering question, ChatGPT leveraged generalized Hooke’s law, which is a fundamental principle for isotropic materials. This problem-solving method allowed it to derive the correct answer.
DeepSeek’s Response
DeepSeek also addressed the aerospace question, but specific details about its response weren’t mentioned. Nevertheless, both AI systems are designed to handle intricate engineering concepts.
GATE 2025: Civil Engineering
ChatGPT’s Solution
For a question about comparing installed capacities across different power generation technologies, ChatGPT utilized relevant formulas and concluded that answer T4 was correct.
DeepSeek’s Limitations
Conversely, DeepSeek provided insights into the limitations of the question, noting that the information presented in the table did not clearly list the installed capacities needed to compute capacity factors. Hence, DeepSeek expressed uncertainty in determining a definitive answer based on the given data.
GATE 2025: Chemical Engineering
ChatGPT’s Analysis
When faced with a question on homogeneous azeotropic distillation, ChatGPT employed degrees of freedom analysis based on Gibbs Phase Rule and process flow constraints to derive an answer of 5.
DeepSeek’s Output
DeepSeek, however, returned an answer of 4, highlighting the varied interpretations and approaches AI models may take while solving advanced queries.
GATE 2025: Computer Science and Information Technology
Responses from Both AIs
A question focused on counting neighboring cells without crosses (X) yielded the same answer of 11 from both ChatGPT and DeepSeek, indicating their capability to analyze patterns effectively.
GATE 2025: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
Insight from ChatGPT
In a query regarding Euclidean distances and clusters, ChatGPT identified trends in the data and deduced the answer to be ‘D’. It effectively recognized the pattern established by the points in the cluster.
DeepSeek’s Confirmation
DeepSeek mirrored ChatGPT’s judgment, also concluding that ‘D’ was the correct answer, demonstrating its ability to evaluate data relationships similarly.
Is AI the Future of Exam Preparation?
The performance of both ChatGPT and DeepSeek illustrates their potential to simplify and enhance the study experience for test-takers. With their advanced algorithms and capability to process complex information, AI models are evolving to support academic and competitive preparations. This not only aids students in understanding difficult concepts but also redefines traditional methods of exam preparation.
As technology continues to progress, tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek are likely to become integral resources for students across various fields, making study routines more effective and interactive.
