Transition to Streaming and Cloud Computing

The acquisition of YouTube marked a significant shift in operations. Google needed to modify its network to ensure that it could deliver high-quality video streaming experiences. The introduction of AI technology brought about additional challenges, particularly due to the overwhelming traffic generated by AI-powered applications and model training processes. In response, a new network architecture was developed.

Multi-Shard Horizontal Network Architecture

Subhasree explained that the new architecture involves a "multi-shard" approach. This kind of architecture allows for independent instances, or "shards," of the network that can be scaled individually. As demand grows, it’s possible to both scale up the network within each shard and add new shards. This setup effectively provides redundancy and allows for capacity expansion similar to what multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) would offer.

Bandwidth and Capacity Expansion

Between 2020 and 2025, the enhancements to the network’s architecture enabled a sevenfold increase in WAN bandwidth. Alongside improved architecture, physical improvements such as new data centers, cloud regions, and infrastructure upgrades have greatly expanded reach and capacity.

Real-World Impact: Customer Success Stories

Before the formal launch of Google’s Cloud WAN, customers began utilizing its capabilities. One notable example is Nestlé, the largest food and beverage company in the world. After transitioning to a cloud-based network backbone with Google, Nestlé connected its global operations through the Cloud WAN offering. With this deployment, Nestlé saw an impressive 40% increase in application performance along with cost reductions.

Expanding Network Offerings for Everyone

Subhasree expressed pride in the feedback from customers like Nestlé. Initially, Cloud WAN was designed solely for Google’s internal use, but the intention has expanded to accommodate a wide range of users. Given the growing variety of applications and the massive data flow, building and maintaining this network is both a significant responsibility and an exciting challenge. Subhasree noted the tremendous effort invested in this project and expressed readiness to support global connectivity through these advanced network solutions.
