Bridging Language Gaps in Africa with AI

A Multilingual Challenge

In Africa, the continent boasts an impressive array of languages, yet many people find themselves cut off from essential services. This exclusion often occurs because digital platforms primarily cater to a limited number of global languages, leaving those who do not speak these languages stranded. Consequently, individuals who rely on local languages struggle to access basic services such as banking and business registration online.

Bolthale AI: Innovating for Inclusion

Based in South Africa, Bolthale AI is on a mission to change this scenario. The startup, which participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator program, is developing tools that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to enable businesses to communicate with their customers in languages they are comfortable with.

Thapelo Nthite’s Vision

We recently met with Thapelo Nthite, the founder of Bolthale AI, to discuss how AI can foster inclusivity. Nthite emphasizes that their aim is to empower individuals to engage fully in their societies and economies. Despite the digital transformation occurring across Africa, many individuals still face linguistic barriers that limit their online interactions.

A personal story Nthite shared illustrates this challenge. He recounted how his grandmother, who communicates in Setswana, asked him for help loading prepaid airtime onto her phone. Although Nthite understood her request, the instructions on the voucher and the phone’s interface were in English, a language she struggled with. This experience highlighted the reality for many people who are unable to perform everyday tasks due to language restraints.

AI Collaboration: A Transformative Shift

When Nthite and his co-founders began their journey, AI was not widely recognized in the business landscape. They had backgrounds in electrical engineering and were involved in research focused on natural spoken language processing. Educating others about AI’s potential proved to be a significant initial hurdle, as many organizations were not yet prepared to dive into AI solutions.

However, the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) changed the narrative. More individuals began to use AI-driven tools in their daily lives, making it easier for Bolthale AI to introduce their solutions to businesses. With larger organizations now incorporating AI into their strategies, Bolthale AI found it easier to advocate for their technology.

Empowering Through Technology

At the core of Bolthale AI’s offerings are sophisticated AI models that help enhance customer engagement. These models can be integrated with other businesses, giving them the flexibility to utilize the technology in ways that extend beyond Bolthale AI’s primary focus. Potential applications include developing audiobooks and language learning resources.

The startup also encourages collaboration with external AI tools to enhance their operations. For instance, Nthite employs a tool he has nicknamed “Mothusi,” which means assistant in Setswana, serving as a personal aid in managing his tasks. Other tools such as coding assistants have streamlined coding processes and improved code evaluations within their workflow.

Continuous Learning and Support

Recognizing the rapid pace of AI development, Bolthale AI places a strong emphasis on continuous learning within their team. They host weekly sessions known as Speaky Wednesday, where team members present insights or share discoveries related to AI tools. This initiative fosters a culture of upskilling while integrating AI more thoroughly into their day-to-day work.

Expanding Linguistic Reach

Looking ahead, Bolthale AI has ambitious plans to broaden its language offerings. They have identified over 20 languages spoken in Sub-Saharan Africa that are used by more than half a billion people. This commitment to linguistic diversity positions Bolthale AI as a vital player in making digital spaces more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

By focusing on local languages and AI technology, Bolthale AI is paving the way for a more connected and equitable digital landscape.
