The AI system named Dreamer, developed by Google’s DeepMind team based in San Francisco, is the first of its kind to independently figure out how to collect diamonds within Minecraft. Researcher Danijar Hafner from Google DeepMind described this development as a significant leap toward achieving general AI systems. Collecting diamonds is no simple task; players must first gather resources by chopping down trees, crafting tables, and creating a pickaxe before finally mining deep underground.

Human players usually spend about 20 to 30 minutes to successfully acquire their first diamond. However, Dreamer learned to mine a diamond efficiently in less than 30 minutes after its trial. This capability demonstrates the AI’s advancement in understanding and navigating the game world.

Unique Learning Process

What distinguishes Dreamer from other AI systems is its ability to learn and improve without direct guidance. Previous research typically involved training AI by showing them numerous hours of gameplay videos. In contrast, Dreamer employed a method known as reinforcement learning. This approach allows AI to evaluate actions based on rewards: if an action yields a positive outcome, the AI is likely to repeat it; if not, it discards that action.

Additionally, Dreamer constructed a mental model of its surroundings within Minecraft. This model became increasingly detailed with each session, allowing the AI to simulate various scenarios internally without physically playing through them.

Hafner noted that Dreamer’s capacity to "imagine the future" could pave the way for creating more intelligent robots capable of interacting with the physical world.
