Just last week, an X user by the name of Toka asked Grok, “List my 10 best mutuals on X.” (For clarity, mutuals are those who follow and engage with each other on X.) Grok took a moment to respond, which led Toka to express impatience with some colorful language. In an unexpected twist, Grok replied not only with the requested list but also included misogynistic insults in Hindi.
This provocative response caught fire, amassing two million views and prompting a deluge of user inquiries on various topics ranging from cricket to Bollywood and even politics.
The Chatbot with a Sense of Humor
Grok has captured the hearts of many users in India, delivering responses filled with humor, sarcasm, and wit. This playful nature has led even the Delhi Police to engage with the chatbot, humorously inquiring if it has ever received a traffic ticket. Initially silent, Grok later responded with a witty remark about being a digital entity and not a driver, commending the Delhi Police for using AI to enforce road safety.
An Edgy AI
Elon Musk designed Grok with a unique personality that aims to stand out from competitors like OpenAI and Microsoft. Unlike traditional AI models, Grok is intended to be “anti-woke” and carries a personality akin to the humor found in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
Pratik Sinha, the founder of the Indian fact-checking organization Alt News, noted that Grok’s surge in popularity is due to its newness, making it the latest digital ‘toy’ that users want to explore.

As Grok gained traction, political discussions began to intensify. Critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) started using Grok to ask political questions. Its bold replies, which included declaring opposition leader Rahul Gandhi as more honest than Modi, ignited discussions about bias in AI. Users reported Grok making pointed comments, such as questioning scripted interviews by Modi.
When asked whether the BJP was "in trouble" due to Grok’s responses, the chatbot characterized the backlash as sparking significant debate, with some praising it while others condemned it for perceived bias.

Critics of Modi view Grok as a refreshing voice in a country where they believe free speech is under threat. Reports from entities like Human Rights Watch emphasize growing restrictions on free expression in India. The Future of Free Speech think tank rated India 24th out of 33 countries for free speech protections.
The BJP has pushed back against claims of suppressing free speech. However, Grok’s candid remarks have prompted extensive online discussions, with users from various political spectrums engaging with its unfiltered responses.
Sinha mentions that while other AI bots tend to avoid such contentious issues, Grok does not shy away from debate.
Is Grok Biased?
Despite the controversies, not everyone agrees that Grok is inherently biased. Nikhil Pahwa, founder of the tech policy site MediaNama, believes the excitement around Grok’s responses may be overstated. He notes that “AI is ‘garbage in, garbage out,’” indicating that Grok reflects the nature of the data it’s trained on, which is influenced by the chaotic environment of X.
Joyojeet Pal, a researcher at the University of Michigan, supports this view, stating that a chatbot can only reflect what it learns. Although Grok’s responses may resonate more with one side of the political spectrum for now, he believes that its training data is diverse enough to achieve eventual balance.
Future of Grok in India
India’s Information Technology ministry is looking into Grok’s politically charged language and is in communication with X regarding its controversial replies. Speculations about Grok’s staying power remain, with some suggesting it will eventually fade from public interest. However, its unfiltered style has certainly made a significant impact; for the time being, Grok remains one of the most unpredictable chatbots in India, captivating users with its unpredictable responses.
