How I Disabled Gemini in My Gmail

The Impact of Gemini on Google Products and Services
Google’s Gemini is making its mark across a wide array of its products, including Gmail, YouTube, and Android devices. While some users have embraced its presence, others, like myself, find the integration of generative AI in services such as Gmail to be quite bothersome. I’ve chosen to disable Gemini in my Gmail account due to various concerns.
Reasons for Dislike for Gemini in Gmail
Unsolicited AI Features
One major complaint I have about the Gemini integration is that it feels forced upon users. I never opted in to have it included in my Gmail account. The concept of being made to use a feature—whether it’s great or not—can lead to resentment among users. It brings to mind the infamous case of Apple and U2, where people were similarly thrust into using something they didn’t want.
Lack of Trust in AI
My skepticism towards AI chatbots, compounded by their tendency to produce unreliable information (often referred to as "hallucinations"), makes me wary of their involvement in my daily tasks. Many chatbots, including those powered by Gemini, have been criticized for ethical concerns, making it hard to trust their capabilities, especially for important communications like emails.
Competence in Writing
Like many others, I can draft emails independently. I don’t need AI to take over this process for me, as it often does. While some individuals may find these tools helpful, I feel they replace rather than assist.
Critique of Smart Features
Smart Compose Limitations
Many users appreciate the Smart Compose feature that accompanies Gmail, viewing it as an enhanced auto-correct tool. However, in my professional experience, I’ve encountered several inadequacies. It sometimes fails to suggest the correct names or misreads email addresses, particularly those with non-Western names. This can be frustrating, especially when accuracy is crucial.
Risk of Over-Reliance
Another concern is the amount of personal information I have stored within Google’s ecosystem. Relying heavily on these services creates risks: if my account were to be hacked or deleted, it could lead to disarray in my digital life.
Benefit of AI Features
Despite my criticism, I recognize that some AI functionalities can be advantageous. For instance, the “Summarize” feature in Gmail can provide quick overviews of lengthy email threads. Still, I find it essential to cross-check these summaries to ensure they align with the actual content. This type of implementation feels more thoughtful compared to a simple Gemini icon.
How to Disable Gemini and AI Features in Gmail
If you resonate with my feelings about Gemini and prefer not to use it, you can easily turn it off. Here’s a step-by-step guide to disabling Gemini in the desktop version of Gmail:
- Click on the settings cog icon located at the top right corner.
- Select "See All Settings."
- Scroll down to "Google Workspace smart features."
- Click on "Manage Workspace smart feature settings."
- Toggle off the "Smart features in Google Workspace" option.
Disabling Gemini will mean missing out on features like automatic calendar entries for emails. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a more selective toggle that allows users to disable Gemini without affecting other useful Gmail functionalities.
Even after turning off Gemini, the associated icons may still appear, and Gmail may prompt you to re-enable the feature if you click on them. Additionally, if you’re also not fond of Smart Compose and similar tools, you can turn those off in Gmail’s main settings menu as well.
In summary, while some users find Google’s AI features beneficial, others, like myself, prefer to operate without the interference of AI in our email communications.
