Remembering Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Fulmer Manus

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Fulmer Manus’s passing on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the remarkable age of 103.

Early Life and Education

Lib was born on January 4, 1921. Growing up in a nurturing environment, she completed her education at Lexington High School. In 1941, she married her beloved husband, Harry Melvin Manus, Sr., marking the beginning of a life filled with love and partnership. Together, they established a flourishing business, Saluda Garden Cleaners and Laundry, which showcased their entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to serving their community.

Family Legacy

Lib leaves behind a large and loving family who will cherish her memory forever. Her children include:

  • Woody Manus (Brenda)
  • Ann Spainhour (Gary)
  • Joy Smith (Lee)

In addition to her children, Lib is survived by her brother, Harold Fulmer (Ola Mae), and a close-knit group of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren, who were a significant part of her life, include:

Additionally, Lib had the joy of welcoming great-great-grandchildren into her life: Caide Hendrix, Trace Hendrix, and Wyrn Rodgers.

Lib had a group of special neighbors she called her “Lake Murray Children," who brought her joy and companionship. Some of these beloved friends were Judy Folk, Marla Smoak, Carmen, Little Curtis, and Dr. John Yarbough. Along with her immediate family, she had countless nieces, nephews, and cousins that she cherished deeply.

Departed Loved Ones

Lib was preceded in death by several loved ones, including her parents, Matthew Stack Fulmer and Ione Hamm Fulmer, her husband, Harry Melvin Manus, Sr., and several siblings: Samuel Rae Fulmer, Virginia Bouknight, Eleanor Dunlap (Maurice), and Edgar Fulmer (Joann). She also experienced the loss of her daughter-in-law, Sandra Manus, a dear friend, Edgar Connor, and some of her "Lake Murray Children," including Marion Folk and Curtis Smoak.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Abbey Road Hospice and the staff at NHC for their exceptional support during this difficult time. Their kindness played a vital role in ensuring Lib’s comfort and care.

Service Details

A visitation will take place at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, located at 1000 B Avenue, West Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday, July 21, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This will be followed by a funeral service at 3:30 PM. After the service, the burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in memory of Lib.

For those wishing to express their condolences further, flowers can be sent to the family or arrangements can be made to plant a tree in her memory.
