Insights from Copilot Experiments: Deep Research, Podcasts, and Actions

Upcoming Features of Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot recently underwent a significant user interface overhaul, leading to the introduction of several new and intriguing features. This revamp marks just the beginning, as the company continues to enhance the platform further. Notably, a sidebar is expected to make its appearance, providing users with a more traditional interface.

New Labs Icon and Features

Among the exciting changes in the works is the addition of a new Labs icon under the "Discover" section in the sidebar. This feature will give users access to experimental tools and applications. Currently, the Labs program is limited and exclusively available to Pro subscribers in the United States.

Features in the Labs Program

The Labs features that are being tested include:

  • Avatars in Voice Mode: This feature will allow users to interact using animated avatars that can respond audibly, making conversations feel more engaging.

  • Generative Layout: Details about this feature remain vague, but it promises to add new dimensions to content creation.

  • Actions: This experiment appears to facilitate internal routes related to "Agents" and "Computer Use." It hints at functionality akin to OpenAI’s Operator, suggesting that Copilot may soon be able to browse the internet and complete tasks independently. Whether this would be limited to the Edge browser or applicable to other browsing contexts is still unclear, but it has generated considerable anticipation.

Deep Research Feature

In a nod to similar features found in ChatGPT, Microsoft will introduce "Deep Research." Described as taking approximately 10 minutes for a task, this feature aims to enhance research processes. Although initially expected to be exclusive to Pro users, Microsoft has previously expanded access to features, leaving the door open for potential availability to free users in the future.

Pages for Enhanced Organization

Another feature on the horizon is called "Pages." This function will likely operate much like a digital canvas where users can transform Copilot-generated responses into editable pages. Users can manipulate content directly and have the option to chat while editing, which is excellent for brainstorming and organizing thoughts. The ability to access these pages separately will help streamline projects and facilitate collaboration.

Podcast Creation Feature

A hidden feature currently undergoing testing is related to podcast creation. While even Labs users do not have access to this yet, code analysis indicates that this capability may allow users to generate podcasts from Copilot’s responses. This functionality may be integrated into the Discover feed, potentially resembling layouts seen in Microsoft’s Daily Briefings and other initiatives like NotebookLM and Gemini.

Enhancements and Widgets

In addition to the features mentioned above, Microsoft is also working on new widgets for response cards. These will include updates for various categories such as weather, finance, and shopping. There are indications that ads, which were seen in previous versions of Copilot, may make a return with the updated user interface.

Final Thoughts on Copilot’s Future

The release timeline for these features remains uncertain, but the array of upcoming improvements signifies that Microsoft Copilot is set to become a more powerful AI assistant. With enhanced capabilities, it will compete more vigorously in the realm of AI-powered productivity tools. The changes are anticipated to significantly enrich user experience and productivity, making it a noteworthy contender in the market.
