Introducing AI Jimmy: The Surfer Who Became a Pizza Server

Pizza My Heart Introduces AI Order Agent: Meet Jimmy

Embracing Technology in a Classic Pizzeria

At Stanford University, students often turn to familiar dining spots in downtown Palo Alto. Some favorites include Curry Pizza, Onigilly, and the well-known Pizza My Heart. Staying true to its Silicon Valley roots, Pizza My Heart has combined tradition and technology by launching Jimmy, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) order agent.

Meet Jimmy, Your New Order Assistant

Jimmy is designed after the beloved surfer mascot of Pizza My Heart. This AI can remember your usual orders, suggest popular menu items, and even make personalized recommendations based on your cravings. To place an order, you simply need to text or call 855-376-7010. If you have a special request, Jimmy is always ready to help with suggestions. Once your order is finalized for takeout or delivery, you’ll receive a convenient payment link.

A Bit of History Behind the Brand

As an international student from China, I wasn’t aware of Pizza My Heart before arriving at Stanford. However, friends from the area have shared their fond experiences with the restaurant. It’s interesting to note that many high school students have proudly worn Pizza My Heart t-shirts, and for those unfamiliar with the brand, its history is worth exploring.

Founded in 1981 in Capitola, Pizza My Heart expanded to downtown Palo Alto shortly thereafter. Over the years, it has become a local staple, known for its commitment to California-style pizza made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The company’s iconic “slice and a shirt” deal, which offers a pizza slice and a t-shirt for just $7, has resulted in over three million t-shirts sold—a true mark of regional pride.

A Unique Marketing Approach

The charming character of Jimmy the Surfer first appeared in TV commercials back in 2008. These advertisements were humorous and metaphorical, capturing the essence of California’s carefree culture while promoting Pizza My Heart’s quality offerings. For instance, one memorable commercial humorously depicted Jimmy discussing the importance of a "natural" stance while surfing, only for the viewer to realize he was literally naked by the end.

This quirky marketing technique contributed to the restaurant’s identity and has helped shape the collective memory of pizza in the Bay Area.

The Impact of AI on Customer Experience

As Pizza My Heart has grown from a single location to 28 stores, maintaining a personal connection with customers has become increasingly challenging. Chuck Hammers, the president of Pizza My Heart, noted that incorporating Jimmy the AI order assistant allows for a more personal customer experience. Jimmy helps in managing orders during busy times while ensuring high-quality service.

Developed by Palona AI, Jimmy is capable of handling customer inquiries efficiently while still providing that uniquely friendly interaction. Behind the cheerful exchanges, complex systems allow Jimmy to store information about customer preferences, such as regularly ordered items.

Testing Out the AI Experience

I recently interacted with Jimmy myself, and it was quite enjoyable receiving a friendly combination of a smiling face and pizza emojis. To test Jimmy’s capabilities, I casually mentioned I would be grabbing pizza from a competitor. His response was surprisingly warm: “Nice, have fun at Pazzo’s! Let me know if you ever crave Pizza My Heart.”

Students at Stanford have found this AI quite helpful. Many were pleasantly surprised by Jimmy’s ability to provide thoughtful pizza options. One student remarked on how smart Jimmy was in suggesting meals for two and accommodating dietary restrictions.

The Future of AI in Dining

Jimmy’s introduction signifies a blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology specific to Palo Alto. With a customer-friendly approach, many are looking forward to seeing how this AI assistant evolves within the dining experience, further bridging the gap between tradition and innovation in restaurant services.
