Today, Google unveiled an important initiative aimed at strengthening the electricity system in the U.S. This ambitious project involves a partnership with PJM Interconnection, the largest electric grid operator in North America, and Tapestry, an innovative project incubated by Alphabet.

According to the latest forecasts from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the demand for electricity is expected to increase dramatically, tripling from previous predictions. By the end of the decade, peak energy demand could rise by an estimated 128 gigawatts (GW).

The rapid growth in electricity demand has led to a backlog of power generation projects in the United States. By the end of 2023, this backlog was noted to be more than twice the total installed capacity of the U.S. power fleet. Specifically, approximately 2,600 gigawatts of capacity was waiting to connect to the grid, as reported by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This significant backlog has prompted grid operators to adopt new databases and evaluation tools to handle thousands of interconnection requests that have surged in recent years.
