Meta has ambitious plans for 2025, focusing on major improvements and innovations in its products. A significant aspect of this strategy involves reducing its workforce by 5%. This information comes directly from Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Meta, who recently indicated that they will be evaluating employees and letting go of those deemed ‘low performers.’

Mark Zuckerberg Announces 5% Layoffs at Meta

Mark Zuckerberg is one of several tech leaders pursuing bold objectives for their companies. According to a report from Bloomberg, a key step in realizing these goals is reducing the workforce by 5%. An internal memo from Zuckerberg revealed plans to focus on the “lowest performers” within Meta for potential layoffs.

As of September 2024, Meta employs approximately 72,000 staff members. If the layoffs proceed as planned, around 3,600 employees may lose their jobs as part of the company’s transition towards its future objectives.

Zuckerberg emphasized that this process will not be immediate. Instead, employees will be assessed carefully, and just because someone has lower performance numbers, it does not guarantee they will be let go. The company intends to provide sufficient notice and support in the form of severance packages to those affected by the layoffs.

Meta’s Search for Talent in AI Development

Looking ahead to 2025, Meta is eager to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. However, before this growth can happen, difficult decisions must be made, including layoffs. Zuckerberg stated that making these changes is essential for the company’s plans in AI, and they are poised to recruit new talent to fill the positions left vacant from the layoffs.

Advancements in Meta’s AI Technologies

Meta has recently made significant strides in its AI journey. The previous year was pivotal as the company launched ‘Meta AI,’ focusing on enhancing user experiences across its social media platforms. By the end of the third quarter of 2024, Meta reported that over 500 million users were engaging with its machine learning functions, positioning itself to become the leading provider in this space.

The next phase for Meta includes developing advanced tools such as chatbots, AI-generated images and stickers, and AI video generation, following in the footsteps of industry giants like OpenAI and Google. Additionally, plans are underway to create an AI-powered search engine, which will utilize major indexing completed over the past eight months, starting from October 2024.

While Meta is gearing up for an impressive rollout of AI features, there’s still considerable work ahead. Although Zuckerberg has not shared specific details on the technologies and tools that users can expect this year, it’s clear that the process of layoffs is a necessary precursor to achieving their ambitious goals in AI advancement.
