Engaging with the group, composed of around a dozen members, I was quickly bombarded with instructions in Spanish, leading to laughter and confusion.

Misunderstanding Unraveled

Curious about the chaos, I inquired about what was happening. To my surprise, I learned that one of the members, Franco, had mistaken me for Meta AI—a chatbot developed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook. Franco had saved my contact under "Meta AI." When I clarified that I was not a chatbot, Harumi, another group member, apologized as he explained this confusion arose from a miscommunication with Franco.

The Chatbot’s Role

Franco then shared a screenshot of a chat where he had asked Meta AI how to add the chatbot to a group chat. The AI had suggested that to include it, all he needed was to save the number: my phone number! This misleading information set off a series of misunderstandings, prompting more group chats and messages.

The AI Surge: A Growing Phenomenon

The intrigue didn’t stop with this initial encounter. Soon after, I received another WhatsApp message from someone named Moon. Again, the AI had played a role in sharing my phone number among yet another group, also connected to Meta AI. In this instance, the AI claimed that my number belonged to it, confusing Moon and others in her Taylor Swift fan group.

Continuous Instances

This bizarre pattern continued with another individual named Maxi. They approached me after Meta AI supposedly directed them to contact me about image generation services. Despite my explanation of being a human, Maxi asked for a phone verification—ending the conversation skeptically after I made the call.

The Bigger Picture: AI in Our Lives

As I reflect on these experiences, I see a broader trend: AI is increasingly becoming integrated into our daily interactions. Companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Amazon are embedding AI features to optimize user experiences. From contributing insights on LinkedIn posts to summarizing product reviews, AI is everywhere.

However, these advancements come with challenges. With Meta AI erroneously sharing my personal information, the potential for miscommunication and misinformation becomes evident.
