Meta Launches New Standalone Meta AI App

Meta has unveiled its new standalone Meta AI application, designed to offer users a dedicated platform for interacting with their AI assistant. Utilizing the latest Llama 4 model, the app aims to provide a more personal and conversational experience right from your smartphone.

Enhanced Voice Interaction

Although many users already access Meta AI through platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, this new application streamlines the interaction experience. The app focuses on voice commands, making it easier and more natural for users compared to traditional text-based prompts.

Meta highlights that Llama 4 is engineered to deliver more relevant and conversational replies. Notably, Australian users can experiment with a full-duplex voice demo. This feature is designed for a more fluid conversation, allowing the AI to generate speech seamlessly, although it is still in the experimental phase.

Key Features of the Meta AI App

The Meta AI app comes packed with several standout features:

  • Web Search Integration: The AI can conduct web searches to provide answers, recommendations, or help with research within the chat interface.

  • Discover Feed: This feature allows users to see popular prompts shared by the community, explore how others utilize the AI, and even remix these prompts for their purposes.

  • Image Generation and Editing: Users can create and modify images using either voice or text commands directly within their conversation with the AI assistant.

  • Experimental Full-Duplex Voice: Currently available for Australian users, this feature aims to enhance natural voice interactions. However, at this stage, it does not yet support real-time web access, which may lead to occasional inconsistencies.

  • Document Handling (Testing): The app is testing capabilities to generate text and image documents (which can be exported as PDFs) and enable document analysis directly within the AI interface, initially available in Australia.

Integration with Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses

For owners of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, this new app replaces the previous Meta View companion app. Users can expect a smooth transition with their glasses settings, paired devices, and saved media automatically transferring to a new ‘Devices’ tab in the updated application.

This integration allows users to initiate a conversation with Meta AI through their glasses and continue the interaction later in the app or on the web. Users can easily switch between the app and web interface, picking up their conversation where they left off.

Upgraded Web Experience

The web interface for Meta AI (accessible at meta.ai) is also undergoing enhancements to match the app’s new features. Now, it includes the same voice interaction capabilities, as well as the Discover feed for prompt ideas. Additionally, users will enjoy an improved image generation experience, complete with more options and presets suitable for desktop use.

The document generation and analysis features currently being tested in Australia are also available through the web platform. Users have control over their interaction style, with settings to toggle the default voice activation feature, allowing for hands-free use.

Global Rollout and Future Prospects

While the app is being rolled out worldwide, Australia is among the first regions to access its core voice features, the full-duplex voice demo, and document handling tests. This launch clearly indicates Meta’s intent to integrate its AI more deeply into its ecosystem, connecting mobile, web, and wearable technology.
