Meta AI has been operational for over nine years, and it relies heavily on data for training its neural networks. As the world’s largest social media networks, Facebook and Instagram are rich sources of user-generated content, which Meta is looking to incorporate into its AI systems.
In May 2024, discussions began circulating concerning expected changes in Meta’s security policies. Reports indicated that starting in late June, certain content, particularly from Facebook and Instagram, might be utilized for this purpose. It’s noteworthy that not all users received this notification; only a selected group from the EU and the US was informed initially.
Subsequently, Meta released a statement to EU residents, but the information provided left many users with more questions than answers. A new webpage titled "Generative AI at Meta" outlined the types of data intended for AI development but lacked specific timelines.
Will My Private Messages Be Used?
The good news is that Meta’s executives assert that private messages will not be used for AI training. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox has clarified that the AI will only leverage public user content posted on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The official statement reads: “We don’t train on private stuff.”
This claim is reiterated on the company’s "Generative AI" page, which emphasizes that only publicly available data, licensed content, and information voluntarily shared by users will be utilized. Importantly, it specifically notes that private messages exchanged between friends and family will not be part of the training dataset.
Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning that for at least a year, Meta AI has been collecting public posts, although the data is anonymized. According to Meta, the AI does not connect your Instagram images to comments made on Facebook or statuses on WhatsApp.

For users wishing to prevent their data from being included in Meta AI’s training, opting out is a rather intricate process. There is no straightforward button to reject data usage; instead, users need to fill out a detailed form on Facebook or Instagram. This form is tucked away in the privacy settings and can be accessed under:

Many users have expressed concern regarding the accessibility of this form, as it appears quite hidden. However, here is a direct link to the opt-out form (officially termed “Data subject rights for third-party information used for AI at Meta”).
Despite possessing this link, it is essential to prepare for a convoluted process, as filling out the form can become quite complicated. Unfortunately, a disclaimer states that Meta does not automatically accept requests sent through this form, implying that even if a user opts out, their data may still be included.

The ongoing situation has drawn significant scrutiny, particularly from NOYB (None Of Your Business), a European digital rights organization. They have filed 11 legal complaints against Meta across various European countries, aiming to safeguard citizens’ personal data.
The Irish Data Protection Commission has also acknowledged these concerns and requested Meta provide clarifications regarding the legal matters. In response, Meta has criticized the plaintiffs and maintained their belief in the legality of their operations, aiming to proceed with integrating AI in a user-friendly manner.
