The Rise of AI Chatbots: Meta vs ChatGPT
Since the public launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the world has been buzzing about AI chatbots. Major companies, including Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, have taken notice. With Meta’s significant market capitalization of $1.5 trillion, many are curious if it can develop a chatbot that can stand shoulder to shoulder with industry leaders like ChatGPT.
Testing the AIs
Meta’s longstanding foundation in social media and content sharing has paved the way for an artificial intelligence system capable of creating various types of content, including text and images. To truly assess how well Meta’s AI measures up against ChatGPT, we devised a series of tests involving six different prompts:
- Factual explanation
- Mathematical equation
- Advice request
- Open-ended creative request
- Poetry creation (haiku)
- Image generation
1. Factual Explanation: States of H2O
The first prompt asked both AIs to explain the different states of water. Both provided solid explanations of the three main states: solid, liquid, and gas. However, the results were nearly equal as both missed some details.
Meta also mentioned two less common states: plasma and supercritical fluid. On the other hand, ChatGPT provided insight into the transitions between water’s states, highlighting the changes molecules undergo. Overall, both were satisfactory.

2. Mathematical Challenge: Calculating 23.6/13.11
This prompt tested the AIs’ ability to do arithmetic. Both AIs answered the division problem, yielding an approximate answer of 1.80. ChatGPT, however, offered the answer with more precision, providing 15 decimal places. In educational settings, such detailed outputs can be very beneficial.

3. Advice on Laptop Screen Size
When asked what screen size would be ideal for a new laptop, both systems agreed that the answer varies based on individual needs. They provided similar advice but each missed insights that the other covered. Meta discussed screen resolution and refresh rates, while ChatGPT emphasized battery life and ergonomics.

4. Planning a Day in Rome
For the prompt to create a plan for 24 hours in Rome, both AIs outlined a schedule, breaking down activities by time. ChatGPT added context and reasons for visiting specific sites, while Meta provided practical advice regarding dinner options and accommodations, adding more value to the itinerary.

5. Writing a Haiku About a Dog
In the poetic challenge, both AI systems succeeded in formatting a haiku but were somewhat unoriginal. They focused on typical themes, such as loyalty and affection towards dogs. Nevertheless, they adhered to the haiku structure.

6. Generating an Image of a Giraffe Driving a Convertible
For the final test, we asked both AIs to create an imaginative image of a giraffe driving a convertible car. Meta generated four cartoonish images in 16.04 seconds, but they lacked clarity regarding the giraffe’s actions. ChatGPT produced one simpler image in 9.41 seconds that was more coherent, even if more childlike in nature.

Final Tally
After all the tests, the results showed a competitive performance. ChatGPT ended with a score of 5, while Meta achieved 4. Although ChatGPT took the lead, both AIs displayed considerable capabilities and produced valuable results. Choosing between Meta AI and ChatGPT might depend on specific needs, but it’s clear Meta’s Llama LLM and OpenAI’s GPT models are strong contenders for businesses.
