A Frightening Encounter
In Port Neches, Texas, a man named Jace Edgar recently shared a terrifying experience involving a phone call that used artificial intelligence to imitate his sister’s voice. The call came from an unknown number with a 409 area code, and Edgar quickly believed he was speaking to his sister, who seemed to be in distress.
“She said she had been in an accident and needed help. I immediately jumped in my truck and started moving,” Edgar recounted to a local news outlet, 12News. What started as an ordinary day for Edgar rapidly escalated into a state of panic as he tried to help what he thought was his sister.
The Illusion of Authenticity
During the phone call, the voice on the other end not only called him by name but also referred to him as "brother," convincing him of its authenticity. “I believed it was her 100%. It sounded just like her,” Edgar admitted. However, as the conversation progressed, he grew more suspicious when the person was unresponsive to his questions.
After several minutes of stalled communication, Edgar hung up and called his sister directly, only to find her safe and unaware of the alarming call.

This time, he was ready. “I told him, ‘The police are on their way, you better hope I don’t get there first,’” he recalled.
