As a player in the growing realm of generative AI, Reddit Answers is set to compete with other AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and Google’s Gemini. Interestingly, similar to X’s Grok, the AI behind Reddit Answers relies heavily on data sourced from Reddit itself.

Launched in December 2023, Reddit Answers is still in its beta phase, catering to a select group of users in nine countries, including India. At the moment, it only supports the English language. Users can ask up to 20 questions per day for free, with premium account holders allowed to submit up to 100 queries daily.

Reddit’s Market Expansion

According to recent reports, Reddit filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on February 22, 2024. As part of its expansion strategy, the company has set up offices in India to comply with local regulations requiring social media platforms to establish a physical presence in the country. This comes after Reddit’s public listing in the United States, which occurred earlier. Historically, Reddit has been free for all users since its inception in 2005, but CEO Steve Huffman hinted in a recent AMA session that some premium content might be moved behind a paywall this year.

A report from The New York Times in 2022 pointed out that many Gen Z users prefer platforms like TikTok for search queries, rather than traditional search engines like Google. Google’s Vice President, Prabhakar Raghavan, noted that nearly 40% of younger individuals look to TikTok or Instagram instead of Google Maps or Search for certain inquiries.

In response to this changing behavior, Google has entered into a partnership with Reddit to enhance its search capabilities. This collaboration gives Google exclusive access to user-generated content from Reddit, which can significantly improve the relevance of search results. Reddit has adjusted its Robots Exclusion Protocol to safeguard its data from being harvested by other generative AI companies, which has led to Google preferring Reddit’s results over traditional SEO-optimized content.
