New Partnership with OpenAI
San Diego State University (SDSU) is taking a significant step to make artificial intelligence (AI) tools more accessible for its students, faculty, and staff. The California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Office has partnered with OpenAI, enabling members of the SDSU community free access to ChatGPT Edu. This version of ChatGPT is tailored specifically for the needs of higher education.
Features of ChatGPT Edu
The ChatGPT Edu platform utilizes advanced GPT-4o technology, which is usually available to those subscribing to paid versions of ChatGPT. This enhanced access includes vital features such as improved data security and privacy. It’s important to note that any personal or university information will remain within the SDSU Edu workspace. Importantly, this data will not be utilized to improve ChatGPT’s general public large language model (LLM).
The Importance of Familiarity with AI
Understanding AI technology is becoming increasingly essential in today’s job market. According to an OpenAI report, California ranks among the top five states in the U.S. where ChatGPT is commonly used by individuals aged 18 to 24. A recent AI survey conducted by SDSU revealed that over 80% of students are already utilizing ChatGPT in their academic lives.

AI Micro-Credential Program
In 2023, SDSU launched its AI micro-credential program, marking it as the first university within the CSU system to do so. This program offers customized resources for students, faculty, and staff designed to teach how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly. To gain insights into usage and expectations, SDSU conducted one of the largest surveys on AI in higher education, which is being replicated in 2024 and expanded to include faculty and staff feedback.
Continuous Curriculum Development
The feedback from these surveys will help shape the micro-credential program. Frazee emphasized that due to AI’s rapid evolution, the curriculum would continually be updated to reflect current trends and practices. The university is also looking into specialized micro-credentials focused on themes like environmental responsibility.
