The Future of Collaboration: AI’s Role in Enhancing Teamwork and Innovation at P&G

Exploring the Impact of AI at P&G
At Procter & Gamble (P&G), innovation is at the core of our mission. We strive to develop solutions that enhance the lives of the billions of people who rely on our products daily. Recently, we have taken a closer look at the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into our operations, utilizing digital tools to speed up the innovation process and improve efficiency.
Engaging with AI: A New Approach
In collaboration with Harvard Business School’s Digital Data Design Institute and the Wharton Business School’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Network, we organized a live hackathon. This event aimed to address real business challenges faced by our brands while incorporating diverse perspectives from P&G professionals.
Key Findings from the AI Hackathon
The hackathon produced remarkable insights about AI’s role in our organization:
1. A Valuable Team Player
Research indicates that teams incorporating AI into their workflows operate approximately 12% faster. Rather than replacing human interaction, AI enhances collaboration, allowing teams to reach their highest potential through combined efforts of humans and AI.
2. Fostering Interdepartmental Collaboration
Our findings show that AI helps individuals from various backgrounds create well-rounded solutions. Since experts from different departments bring unique viewpoints, AI serves as a bridge, connecting these perspectives and making for more comprehensive approaches to problem-solving.
3. Boosting Employee Morale
Beyond improvements in efficiency, AI positively affects the workplace atmosphere. The user-friendly, language-based AI interface fosters emotional engagement, producing favorable responses from team members during the hackathon. This demonstrates that AI technology can enhance not just productivity but also the overall work environment.
Why AI Matters for P&G
Integrating AI into our teams enhances collaboration, employee engagement, and overall capabilities. When staff members feel involved and connected, it leads to innovative solutions that tackle real-world challenges—from removing tough stains and ensuring baby dryness to effectively cleaning dishes using less water. Moreover, we can launch these solutions to the market more quickly.
"Our study confirms what we have long believed: AI is transformational for innovation," remarked Victor Aguilar, P&G’s Chief Research & Development and Innovation Officer. He emphasized that AI serves as a significant catalyst whether employees are working individually or as part of a team, unlocking inventive ideas and accelerating innovation progress.
Commitment to AI Training
To maximize the benefits of AI, it is essential that all employees learn to integrate these technologies effectively into their daily tasks. Seth Cohen, P&G’s Chief Information Officer, highlighted our commitment to continuous training, which will equip employees with the skills they need to utilize AI in their roles, thereby increasing their contributions to the company.
He added, "Through our ongoing partnership with Harvard’s Digital Data Design Institute, we aim to explore new methods to leverage digital tools that will enhance our operations, products, and overall business."
