Turning Off WhatsApp AI Could Unexpectedly Disable Meta AI on Your Phone—Here’s What You Need to Consider

WhatsApp is a widely used messaging app that has become the go-to choice for many smartphone users, particularly for those not using Apple devices. Recently, however, some significant changes have been introduced, which may not sit well with all users. It’s worth noting that WhatsApp is owned by Meta, formerly known as Facebook, which also owns Instagram. Recently, Meta has developed a new AI system akin to ChatGPT, and it’s being integrated into WhatsApp, whether users are on board with it or not.
The implementation of this AI has not been transparently communicated to users by Meta, occurring in a recent update without prior warnings. This leaves many users puzzled about what these changes entail. While some aspects of this development may seem promising, the rollout has raised certain concerns. Importantly, this AI feature is currently not fully operational in Europe. If you’re in Europe and prefer to avoid the new AI, consider uninstalling WhatsApp before it updates to the new version. However, it appears the new AI won’t drastically alter the app’s primary functions, serving mainly as an additional chat option.
Introducing Meta AI in WhatsApp
As we mentioned earlier, the new AI technology hasn’t rolled out entirely in Europe. Users can check if they have the AI on their devices by opening the WhatsApp app and locating a blue circle in the bottom right corner. This circle is positioned alongside the “chat, news, community, and calls” options.
If the blue circle is absent, then the update hasn’t reached your device yet. If you do find it, tapping on the blue circle will allow you to start a private conversation with the AI. This feature functions similarly to a chatbot, enabling users to ask questions, conduct translations, and quickly search for information—all without leaving the WhatsApp environment or installing additional applications.
This AI, designed as regenerative AI, is built to learn from the interactions it has with WhatsApp users. It gathers information not only from the direct conversations but also potentially from other user interactions that Meta might utilize, raising privacy questions for many.
Options for Users: Can You Disable Meta AI?
Currently, if you’ve updated to include the Meta AI, there is no option to remove this feature from your WhatsApp app. Meta has chosen to embed this AI functionality deeply within the app, similar to earlier features like Stories. Users will have the option to use it or ignore it, but the feature will remain present either way. This lack of opt-out raises concerns about user consent, as many may not have agreed to have their private conversations used as data points for training an AI.
This controversial move seems to be a strategic effort by Meta to encourage user engagement with their AI, aiming to maintain competitiveness in the constantly evolving technology landscape. Currently, the Meta AI is available for use at no cost in Europe, with no subscriptions or actions necessary from users to access it. According to statements from Meta, the AI already has over 700 million active users worldwide each month. Their ongoing goal is to expand this user base significantly.
